The Orange County Korean War Veterans Memorial Committee (Chairperson Park Yoon-sook) received the ‘2024 Nonprofit Excellence Award’ from U.S. Representative Michelle Park Steel (45th District) on August 8th, in honor of National Nonprofit Day. The award ceremony took place at the Hawaiian Gardens City Hall.
The event was attended by over 200 members of various organizations and representatives from 18 nonprofit groups within the 45th District. The awards recognized exemplary nonprofits in fields such as education, healthcare, veterans' services, and volunteering, which were selected based on their transparent operations and significant contributions to the community.
Representative Steel commented, “While many excellent organizations contribute to community development, it’s unfortunate that they are not always recognized. That’s why we held this event,” receiving a warm round of applause from the attendees.
Chairperson Park Yoon-sook shared, “We are proud to be the first Korean-American organization to receive this award among the 18 organizations recognized today. Our committee provides scholarships to about 20 descendants of Korean War veterans annually, educates the next generation about the Korean War, and manages the memorial weekly. We also host essay, art, and media competitions. Being acknowledged in this way by the mainstream community is a significant achievement for us.”
Other recipients of the award included Artesia Christian Home, Buena Park Lions Club, Casa Youth Shelter, Fountain Valley Rotary, Hawaiian Gardens Little League, and La Palma Community Foundation.
